Perfectionist Auto Sound & Security in Anchorage, Alaska, is one of the biggest success stories in the automotive electronics and restyling industry, with owner John Schwartz taking it from $350,000/year in revenues in 2005 to over $2 million in 2013. And they’re continuing to grow.

Schwartz told participants at the KnowledgeFest 2014 that the biggest difference was the way he approached his business. He is constantly making improvements to his space, his business systems and his customer service with the goal of continuing to grow each and every year.

In other words, he works ON his business — getting advice and insight wherever he can find it — instead of working IN it. That’s also one of AVIDWORX’s key philosophies for retailers!

The Need:

In spring of 2014, Perfectionist enlisted AVIDWORX Productions to complete a major upgrade of his showroom, the engine that drives any retail business.

Schwartz’s goal was to create a more interactive environment for customers, as well as to increase year-round sales in a diverse range of product categories to complement the store’s extremely busy remote start business.

“We were pretty outdated and didn’t have a good flow and good direction,” he said. “When I built the store, I did it on my own. But I’m not a merchandiser and I’m not an installer, and I knew that the team at AVIDWORX is the best at what they do.”

AVIDWORX worked with Perfectionist through the design process to decide the perfect mix of showcases and open space, and provided detailed 3D renderings in two finish types that included everything – including Perfectionist’s demo car.

The Result:

In June, the first full month after the install, business was up 34% over the previous year. July was on par with the previous record year, and August and September numbers were up 20% year over year.

“When people walk in, they instantly walk to the back of the store where the sound stage is, which is huge,” said Schwartz. “They’re touching things and asking us questions, which is something we never really had before. Customers would come in and ask questions, but they didn’t have any direction of where to go.

“And it’s a different kind of question they’re asking. They feel comfortable, they love the way the store looks, and that everything looks so modern. I’ve had customers tell me, ‘Your store makes me want to buy something because it’s so nice.'”

The interactive and educational elements have also boosted sales, Schwartz said.

“With everything interactive, customers are pushing buttons and listening to things, and changing things themselves,” Schwartz explained. “The switching is so simple, it’s not like people are scared to touch things or are worried about breaking something.

“For example, our sound damping display – that thing is awesome because everything is self-explanatory. People walk up to it and start pressing buttons, and they learn everything there is to know about that product. And the factory upgrade display is great — people are playing with it and selling themselves on it before they even talk to us, which is huge for our sales staff.”

The showcases at the back of the room were also highlighted with LED effects, which Schwartz said draws customers in like “moths.”

The finish level chosen by Perfectionist is Premium Grey — one of three standard finish levels offered by AVIDWORX, although custom finishes are available for a small add-on. Premium Grey is a textured wood grain finish that presents well in bright stores.

The selection of showcases includes our wall-mounted M1 units, which are 18 and 36 inches wide, and our M2 sound stages in a variety of sizes and configurations.

 

Added Value:

 

In addition to working with Perfectionist to create the right look and right mix of products, AVIDWORX also provided our complimentary Retail Grader business assessment. We looked at every aspect of the business — revenues by product category, revenue goals, installation fees, etc. — to recommend additional ways for Perfectionist to increase revenues and margins. Perfectionist is now making more money for every sale and installation with only a few minor changes to the business.
